Morning sunlight filtered gently through the tall trees surrounding the ancient temples of Angkor Wat. The forest was still waking up. Birds moved softly in the branches, and a cool breeze carried the scent of leaves and damp earth.

That was when I noticed a tiny figure sitting close beside his mother.
His name, I later learned, was Calvin.
Calvin was small even for a young monkey. His arms looked delicate, and his wide eyes followed every movement his mother made. Like most babies, he stayed close to her side, pressing his tiny body against her warm fur.
But this morning felt different.
While the other young monkeys in the troop were already climbing branches and chasing one another through the vines, Calvin remained quiet. He reached gently toward his mother, hoping for comfort and nourishment.
His mother, Casi, sat still on a tree root near the temple stones. She looked calm but tired, her eyes drifting toward the forest canopy. Every few minutes, Calvin leaned closer again, searching for reassurance.
It was a quiet, patient moment.
There was no rushing, no sudden movement. Just a small baby waiting beside the one place he felt safest.

The troop slowly moved through the trees, but Casi stayed where she was for a while longer. Calvin rested his head against her side, blinking slowly as the morning light warmed the clearing.
Watching them, it was impossible not to think about the quiet bond between mothers and their young.
In the wild, every day brings new challenges. Food must be found. Safety must be maintained. And sometimes a mother must balance her own strength with the needs of her baby.
Calvin didn’t understand any of that.
He only knew that his mother was near.
And for a small monkey in a vast forest, that closeness meant everything.
Eventually Casi shifted slightly, adjusting her position. Calvin’s eyes brightened, and he pressed closer again, hopeful and trusting.
The moment was simple, almost easy to miss.
But moments like this are the quiet heartbeat of life in the Angkor forest—small stories unfolding beneath ancient trees.
Calvin remained beside his mother, patient and calm, while the troop continued its slow journey through the morning light.
For now, the forest felt peaceful.
And Calvin stayed close to the one place that felt like home.
