She Stayed Beside Him Until Sunrise — A Quiet Night Beneath the Angkor Trees

The first light of morning moved softly across the stones near the Angkor Wat forest trail. The air felt cool, and the trees held onto the last moments of night. A small group of macaques rested high in the branches, but one female monkey remained near the ground, sitting quietly beside a tiny infant.

She barely moved.

For hours, she stayed close, brushing leaves away with careful hands. Occasionally, she looked up toward the canopy as if waiting for the troop to return. Nearby monkeys passed through the trees, but she did not follow.

The forest felt unusually still.

She shifted closer to the infant and gently adjusted her position beneath a low root. The quiet rhythm of the morning continued around her. Birds called from deeper within the trees. Sunlight reached across the path.

A younger monkey approached once, paused, then climbed back toward the branches. The mother remained where she was.

Visitors walking near the temple slowed their steps. Some watched from a respectful distance. No one interrupted the moment.

There was no dramatic movement, no loud sound, only the steady feeling of care that seemed to hold her in place.

As the day warmed, she finally lifted her head and looked toward the trees. The troop moved farther into the forest, but she stayed behind a little longer.

The Angkor forest carried on quietly around her.
